Water Heating & Cooling Systems

Think of your disappointment when that soothing warm bath you had been eagerly awaiting is destined to remain just that – a dream, because there is absolutely no warm water left. And don't you hate it when a cold drink of water from the faucet turns out to be a scalding mistake?
Our domestic water systems carry our hot and cold water. Supply lines carry the water to all the relevant appliances and fixtures. But how is this done? How do the hot and cold water remain separate?

Cold water comes directly from the main water supply. Water from the municipal water system enters your house via a high pressure pipe, and it is then sent through water lines to your different fixtures and appliances. For example, toilets use amazingly large amounts of cold water. Moreover, since the majority of the cold water is intended for drinking, filter or water softener appliances may be integrated into the water supply system. You may also opt to install water filters under your sinks. These will ensure your drinking water system is free of contaminants.

Your water heater provides you with hot water. Water heaters are operated by either electricity or gas, and include an inner steel tank which holds 40 to 60 gallons of water. The cold water, carried by pipe from the central water supply, reaches the tank. The water is gradually heated by the tank's electric heating elements. Home water heaters should ideally be set in the 120 to 140 degree F (40 to 60 C) range. The thermostat allows you to control the temperature of the water. Heated water is transported from the water heater to different fixtures and appliances in the house by means of one or more outgoing pipes. To drain the tank or clear away sediment, use the drain valve at the base of the heater. To keep the heater in good working order, you should empty the tank every six to twelve months.
