Slab Leaks
Slab leaks are hidden water leaks in under concrete water lines and sanitary sewer pipes. Slab leaks are money and water wasters responsible for high water bills and expensive water related damages. Plumber Huston Texas offers early leak detection and repair services to conserve water and save you from unnecessary spending.
Warning Signs of Slab Leaks
-Fluctuations in water pressure and temperature
-Damp or wet patches on floors
-Hearing running water when all plumbing fixtures are turned off
-High water bill
Slab Leaks in Incoming Water Lines
Incoming water lines carry clean water to buildings under high pressure. A broken, burst or nicked potable water pipe will leak out water nonstop – hence slab leaks in fresh water supply lines will be of a much higher destructive nature than ones that occur in under slab sanitary sewer pipes.
Common Causes
Shifting Foundation – Weak water lines will break apart and leak out water as foundation shifts with time.
Electrolysis – Metal pipes contain stored energy. When different metals come into contact with one another an electrical current will flow to equalize stored energy. When copper water pipes come into contact with other metals, the resulting electrical current will form pinhole leaks in the incoming water lines.
High Water Pressure – Copper pipes are surrounded by protective coats. Pressurized water flowing through small diametered copper lines will corrode their protective layers. Corroded water pipes are weaker and more susceptible to slab leaks.
Poor Workmanship - Inexperienced plumbers, second-rate plumbing supplies and inferior installation of water pipes – weaken lines against high water pressure, shifting foundation, and erosion. Weak water lines are highly susceptible to slab leak formation.
Slab Leaks in Sanitary Sewer Lines
Slab leaks can also form in the sanitary sewer pipes. The sanitary sewer line will leak out water only when a plumbing fixture such as a faucet is turned on or when a toilet is flushed.
Common Causes
Commercial Drain Cleaners - Commercial drain cleaners corrode cast iron pipes. Weak metal pipes will easily break apart and leak out water.
Shifting Foundation - Fragile PVC and cast iron pipes may burst as foundation shifts with time.
Rusty Pipes - When underground pipes are fixed in damp soil, dissolved minerals like chloride and sulfate dent and break cast iron and galvanized pipes.
